Her nickname and titles
Lady Aisha, may God be pleased with her, was given a nickname and title by the Beloved, may God bless him and grant him peace, due to her great status and high position with him. Below we will list some of her nicknames and titles:
(1) The Mother of the Believers, because God Almighty says: “The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers.” [الأحزاب: 6].
(2) Umm Abdullah, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, gave her this nickname, as she wanted to have a nickname, and Aisha wanted the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, to give her a nickname. On the authority of Urwa, on her authority, she said: “All of my female companions have a nickname.” He said: “Then give me the nickname of your son Abdullah” – meaning the son of her sister Asma. He said: So she was given the nickname Umm Abdullah.
On the authority of Aisha, she said: When Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr was born, I brought him to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he spat in his mouth, and it was the first thing that entered his stomach, and he said: He is Abdullah, and you are the mother of Abdullah, so I have not ceased to be called by that nickname, and she has never given birth.
3- (Aisha): A softening of Aisha; it was confirmed that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said in the hadith: (O Aisha, this is Gabriel greeting you with peace).
4- (Muwaffaqah): It was reported in Sunan Al-Tirmidhi on the authority of Ibn Abbas, narrating on the authority of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: (Whoever has two offspring from my nation, Allah will admit him into Paradise because of them), so Aisha said: So whoever has a offspring from your nation? He said: (And whoever has a offspring, O Muwaffaqah), she said: And whoever does not have a offspring from your nation? He said: (Then I am a offspring for my nation, they will not be afflicted with the likes of me), and the meaning of (offspring) is whoever has two children who die.
5- (Humayra): This was confirmed by Al-Nasa’i in Al-Sunan Al-Kubra; on the authority of Aisha, she said: The Abyssinians entered the mosque playing, so he said to me: (O Humayra, do you want to look at them), and its meaning is white.
Al-Dhahabi said: “She was a beautiful white woman, and that is why she was called Al-Humaira’.” He said: “Al-Humaira’ in the language of the people of Hijaz means white with blond hair.”
6- (Al-Siddiqah): This was mentioned in the hadith of Banu Al-Muntafiq, and it became famous among scholars to call her by this name; Masruq used to say: Al-Siddiqah, the daughter of Al-Siddiq, told me.
Her role in the Prophet's migration
The Mother of the Believers Aisha and her sister Asma, may God be pleased with them, despite being two daughters, were the best supporters and helpers in the matter of migration. What is narrated about that is that when the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his companions, set out for migration, a group of polytheists, including Abu Jahl, came to Abu Bakr’s house. Asma, may God be pleased with her, went out to them and they asked her: Where is your father? She said: By God, I do not know. Abu Jahl raised his hand and slapped her on the cheek, a slap that knocked off her earring. This scene was in front of Lady Aisha, may God be pleased with her, and she was struck with psychological pain and fear of the people’s brutality towards her. However, she was as strong as Asma, even though she was not yet ten years old.
The reason for the Prophet’s marriage to Lady Aisha
The marriage of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, to Aisha was by revelation from God Almighty, and this revelation was a dream. It was proven from Aisha, may God be pleased with her, that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to her: “I saw you in a dream three nights ago. The angel came to me with you in a silk garment and said: This is your wife. I uncover your face and it is you. I say: If this is from God, let it happen.”
The female companion Khawlah bint Hakim – may God be pleased with her – suggested Sawdah bint Zam’ah to the Prophet – may God bless him and grant him peace – to marry her, and she also suggested Aisha bint Abi Bakr, so he married both of them.
Situations from Aisha's life and her dealings with the Prophet
Anyone who contemplates the biography of the Prophet with the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, may God be pleased with her, will clearly see how she dealt with the Messenger of God, and the extent of his love for her. This is indicated by his saying to her: “I know when you are pleased with me and when you are angry with me.” She said: “How do you know that?” He said: “When you are pleased with me, you say: ‘No, by the Lord of Muhammad.’ And when you are angry with me, you say: ‘No, by the Lord of Abraham.’” She said: “Yes, by God, O Messenger of God. I do not abandon anything but your name.”
He also saw her jealousy for the Messenger; she said, may Allah be pleased with her: A group of Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: As-Samu (death) be upon you. Aisha said: I understood them and said: And upon you be As-Samu and the curse. She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Take it easy, Aisha, for Allah loves gentleness in all matters.” I said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I said: And upon you.”
And her patience with him when she chose him over this worldly life and its adornments; On the authority of Aisha, the Mother of the Believers, may God be pleased with her, she said: When the Messenger of God was commanded to give his wives a choice, he began with me and said: “I am going to mention something to you, so do not be hasty until you consult your parents.” She said: He knew that my parents would not have commanded me to separate from him. She said: Then he said: “God Almighty said: {O Prophet, tell your wives, if you desire the life of this world and its adornments, then come to me.} {I will provide for you and release you with a good release. If you desire Allah and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter, then indeed, Allah has prepared for the good-doers among you a great reward.} She said: I said: In which of these should I consult my parents? Indeed, I desire Allah and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter. She said: Then the wives of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did as I did.
And her support for him in his peace and war. Anas bin Malik, may God be pleased with him, said: “On the day of Uhud, the people fled from the Prophet. “I saw Aisha bint Abi Bakr and Umm Sulaym, and they were rolling up their sleeves. I saw their market servants carrying the water skins on their backs and emptying them into the mouths of the people. Then they would return and fill them, then they would come back and empty them into the mouths of the people. The sword fell from the hands of Abu Talha either twice or three times.”
She, may God be pleased with her, even asked the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, for permission to go on jihad, and he said: “Your jihad is the Hajj.”
The Prophet declared his love for her in a gathering of people when he was asked: Who is the most beloved person to you? He said: “Aisha.” It was said: Of the men? He said: “Her father.”
Her knowledge
She, may God be pleased with her, was a scholarly reference for the senior companions and their jurists. If they had any doubts about something in religion, they would ask her for a fatwa and she would give them a fatwa. She narrated many hadiths from the Messenger, exceeding two thousand hadiths, and a group of companions narrated from her, including Omar ibn al-Khattab, his son Abdullah, Abu Hurairah, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, and others.
Its merit
The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, testified to her virtue, saying: “The virtue of Aisha over other women is like the virtue of tharid over all other foods.” Agreed upon.
Among its virtues is what he – may God bless him and grant him peace – said to her: “O Aisha, this is Gabriel sending you his greetings.” She said: “And upon him be peace and God’s mercy.” Agreed upon.
She said: When I saw the Prophet’s good mood, I said: O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for me. He said: O Allah, forgive Aisha her past and future sins, what she kept secret and what she made public. Aisha laughed so hard that her head fell into her lap from laughter. The Messenger of Allah said to her: Does my supplication please you? She said: Why should your supplication not please me? He said: By Allah, it is my supplication for my nation in every prayer.
The last moments of the life of his Messenger were in her room and on her lap. She said: Among the blessings of Allah upon me is that the Messenger of Allah died in my house, on my day, between my early morning and my early afternoon, and that Allah combined my saliva with his saliva at his death. Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Abi Bakr) entered upon me, holding the siwak in his hand, and I was supporting the Messenger of Allah. I saw him looking at him, and I knew that he loved the siwak, so I said: Shall I take it for you? He nodded his head: Yes, so I took it from him, but he was very hard on me, and I said: Shall I soften it for you? He nodded his head: Yes, so I softened it, and he ordered him to go, and in front of him was a bowl or a box – Umar was not sure – in which there was water. He put his hands in the water and wiped his face with them, saying: “There is no god but Allah, death has its agonies.” Then he raised his hand and said: In the highest companion until he died and his hand fell.
Among her blessings, may God be pleased with her, is that she was the reason for the revelation of some verses of the Qur’an, including the verse on dry ablution. This was when she borrowed a necklace from Asma’, may God be pleased with her, and it was lost from her. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, sent some of his companions to look for it. They were over for prayer and did not have water, so they prayed without performing ablution. When they came to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, they complained to him, and the verse on dry ablution was revealed. Asid ibn Hudayr said to Aisha: “May God reward you with good. By God, no matter has ever befallen you except that God has made a way out for you and has made a blessing in it for the Muslims.” Agreed upon.
Her death
She died, may God be pleased with her and satisfy her, in the year fifty-seven according to the correct view, and it was said: in the year fifty-eight, on the night of Tuesday, the seventeenth of Ramadan, after the odd-numbered prayer, and she was sixty-six years old, and she was buried that night in Al-Baqi.
